Welcome everyone in my creative corner of doom :evillaugh:

Updates

<update 11.10.2010>

OVER!!!

Thanks everyone for paying attention, I hoped you learned something from it ^^ I will proabably repeat this again in the future =3

Will hold a small lesson on how I shade:

On livestream at 2 pm my time (15 minutes)

Basically a Livestream in which I shade, but I will turn the microphone on and explain a little what I'm doing in the meantime, how I shade, what I watch out for, etc,....

You can also ask me questions in the chat (so please keep it free from private conversations so I won't miss any questions, you can go wild on chatting again in one of my regular livestreams ;P ) and I will do my best answering them ^v^

Will work for about 2 hours probably...

I've been asked about this a few times in the past and today feeling like doing it, so I thought, hey, why not =v= Just an offer~ If you miss it, don't worry, if it turns to a success, I will repeat it in the fututre =3

Info:
Working with: Illuststudio (but I used the same technique on SAI and PSCS4 before, so it shouldn't be a problem), Wacom-Tablet, LOADS of music and icecream!

</update end>

Hello everyone~ Welcome to my little blog-update~~~:heart:

The teacher-blog exists to a purpose: You can ask questions here that I will answer ;) If you need advice, have questions,... ask them here! I will do my best to answer them!

Another thing you can do here is suggesting new lessons! I'm currently working on a lesson about creating character-designs with the help of a self-made base, but maybe you don't need help with anything like this?? I can't read minds, so post away what you want to see. If I find the time, I will try coming up with something!

Regards,

~Deamond

Introduction
My name is Deamond but most people just call me Dea. I'm drawing Manga for about 8 years, since 3 years digitally, 2 years with tablet. My standard-programs are IllustStudio, Paint Tool SAI, Photoshop CS3 and MangaStudio EX 4.0. My specialty is screentoning, composition and coloring (especially on hair and eyes). Weakpoints are facial anatomy and waaaaaaaay too many details... -______-;

(Did this just sound like a dating-announce or what?! :rofl: If you like drawing and long lake-side-walks, note me =P Kiddin~)

I'm not a native english speaker, so sometimes don't wonder if what I say doesn't make sense ;P I will do my best to write in a way you will understand!

My function on MA:
Working on MangaAcademy as one of the teachers, it will be my job to teach you improving your own works.

I dislike giving 'critics' as most people tend to do this in a negative way. I prefer giving advice ;) It is my job to give it, but it is up to you if you take it.

Different from many others I prefer teaching techniques mainly. I want you to develop your own style and to improve it with better ways to accomplish a desired effect, rather than to show you how exactly something has to be done step by step. It is to give you different possibilities. Art varies and there can only be 'art' if people develop their own style and works ;) To start always is hard, but with the right foundation, new techniques will make your life as an artist way easier. This is my part: Teaching you these advanced skills.

Could I get a little advice on how the side of the face works on females? e.g. 3/4 view of the face and how the cheek bone works ect if you get what I mean :3?

I get what you mean, but the problem is this is my own weakpoint ^^; I'm not very good in that myself, so maybe it would be best to look for tutorials of it on DA. We have couple of it in our tutorial-gallery as well =3 But sorry, I can't teach something that I'm not fond of myself ^^;

Thank you for the tips - they were really helpful :hug:.

Oh, I was wondering - maybe you know ways or trainings, which would imrove drawing speed? Except practice, of course.

PS. Sorry, that I didn't reply to your original message - I wanted to save it for tips and if you reply to it it disappears from your inbox :(.

Well.. there is only practice ^^; The more often you use a technique, the faster you will be able to use it......

I was wondering, maybe you could give me some tips on background composition? Usually, I don't have imagination to draw them or how to compose relevant backgrounds, that's why my BG are usually so empty :(. My art is suffering from it, I guess :(.

xD Backgrounds are my big weakpoint as well xD I tend to get too lazy to draw them anymore once my characters are finished. The problem usually starts with the character.... if you draw a character without thinking of what to put in the background later, its almost impossible making a background that matches...

Let me show you what I mean...

This one was a lineart that should portrait my character Deamond:
[link]

It looked really nice, especially in my head. I wanted to do something with blue and dark colors, but didn't think at all about what to put in the bg... after coloring him I still couldn't come up with something decent -> Had to come up with a standard background. Typical anime-like dots, textures, resized parts of the picture, etc... examples:
[link] [link] [link] [link]

You see what I mean? Look at the characters. They stand there posing -> They don't really belong to a background anyway.... so it is hard coming up with something for them....

The only way to get out of that is to think about the background beforehand. What is your character doing? How can you bind him/her into the background? Make them interact?

If you know during your sketch already what's going in the background, its way easier to later put them in. That goes for complex pictures that actually interact with the surroundings as well as pictures of just your character staring out of the pic.

For example here:
[link]
These two characters are 'dancing' but I already knew I was going to make this high view, so they are actually flying before starting the lineart -> If I hadn't I would have probably sat there, having the charas colored and puzzling over a bg, in the end going for my standard backgrounds again xD
Another good example how background and foreground match:
[link]
The lineart was pretty simple: A character standing there with a waving scarf -> It had to be outside, and for example this wind element could be used again. Flying leaves or something else with movement. This character could as well stand on top of a high mountain, the deep valley in the background, etc... it is small details you give your character that can interact with a background later... Another example for the very same effect: [link]

Another way is to let your characters ineract with the background. Its easy to come up with backgrounds then as your character is part of it already.

One of my characters is mechanic, so when drawing him at work, it was obvious I'd draw a lab around him. What is typical for a lab? screws, parts, etc lying around, electronic looking things, dust, dirt,... and so I sat him right in the middle of all of this: [link]

Another possibility is to draw a background and THEN add the characters. =3 Of course you have to have a rough idea beforehand where you want to put them... but it works pretty well: [link] [link]

I hope these examples made sense to you :D ^^; lol
